Flyovers in chennai
Even as 11 flyover projects are already under way across the city, the Mayor announced three new flyovers - two in North Chennai and one in South - during the budget announcement on Wednesday.
In North , flyovers will be built at Cemetry Road-Washermenpet clock tower intersection and at Ganeshapuram railway subway, while in South , a flyover with a vehicular subway will be constructed at Thiruvanmiyur- Lattice Bridge Road intersection.
In addition, Chennaiites have reasons to cheer as the Mayor announced that 11 small bridges would be constructed across main waterways to connect residential settlements developed on the banks of these canals.
Such small bridges will be built on Buckingham Canal (Ezhil Nagar-Nehru Nagar), Captain Cotton Canal (Vivekananda Nagar-Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Krishnamurthy Nagar-M K B Nagar), Otteri Nullah (Narashimma Nagar-S M Nagar and N Block-O Block), Virigambakkam Canal (Paari Street- Kannagi Street), Trustpuram Canal (Bajanai Koil Street), Mambalam Canal (Sathiyamurthi Nagar-B Block), Velacherry Canal (Vijayanagar and Velachery byepass- Venkateshwara Nagar) and Raj Bhavan Canal (Mathialagan Street-Nehru Nagar).
To ease traffic congestion at R K Mutt Road area, it has been planned to develop a new link road at Adyar, to connect Greenways Road and Durgabai Deshmukh Road via Music College campus, while a proposed four-lane road connecting Anna Nagar and Ayanavaram (New Avadi Road- Medavakkam Tank Road-Raju Naicker Road) will be carried out after acquiring land from Metrowater and Institute of Mental Health, Kilpauk, Subramanian added.
For the benefit of road users the Corporation has proposed to concretise 13 arterial roads in North Chennai.
Padi Flyover-Chennai
Though the new facility has enthused the people, the authorities have asked road-users to exercise caution while using the facility during the first few weeks as taking wrong directions may even be fatal.
When this reporter visited the new facility on late Thursday, workers were giving finishing touches to a whole lot of things.
However, barring three high mast lamps on the Anna Nagar stretch, there are no other lamps. Enquiries revealed that even the installed high-mast lamps were not provided power connections by the TNEB. Neither were signboards available on the spot. When the Kathipara grade separator was opened in Guindy last October, the absence of signboards posed a big problem and poor lighting had even resulted in a fatal accident on the third day of the grade seperator’s opening.
Buses coming from Villivakkam bus terminus will take left and enter CTH Road, ICF Junction, ICF Annexure Road, New Avadi Road, III Avenue Junction, VI Avenue, 21st Main road, 18th Main Road, 100ft Road and reach Wheels India junction.
Buses and light vehicles coming from Kunnur High Road will take ICF Junction, turn left to New Avadi Road, III Avenue Junction, VI Avenue, 21st Main Road, 18th Main Road, 100ft Road and reach Wheels India junction.
Buses and light vehicles coming from New Avadi Road will take left at the III Avenue Junction and pass through VI Avenue, 21st Main Road, 18th Main Road, 100ft Road and Wheels India junction.
Buses coming from III Avenue will take left to pass through the VI Avenue, 21st Main Road, 18th Main Road, 100ft Road and Wheels India junction.
Two-wheelers and autorickshaws coming from SIDCO Nagar, Villivakkam Bus Terminus, Kunnur High Road, New Avadi Road and III Avenue can follow the existing route upto Nathamuni junction and turn left in order to take the Old Thirumangalam Road, 18th Main Road and 100ft Road and reach Wheels India junction.
Traffic from Red Hills towards Anna Nagar should move at the ground level. Vehicles from Anna Nagar to Padi can take the flyover and proceed left. Traffic from Anna Nagar to Villivakkam must go on the bridge and take right. Traffic from Villivakkam to Padi should go straight along the flyover and vice-versa. Vehicles from Red Hills to Villivakkam must move on the flyover.
The traffic from Redhills towards Padi will have to go up on the flyover and take right. Police said traffic on the bridge may be restricted on the first a few days.
Gundy Flyover-Chennai
The Guindy overbridge is open to public amongst Diwali lightings - kudos to the state govt . But, people get confused initially of using the multli bridge - the nameboards of places appeared 2 days late on the bridge. A person lost his life, after the bridge was open as he was confused by the way. So, dear passerbys - please be careful when you commute on this bridge. Now you have the nameboards, but yet if you gonna speed, it is going to be tough - ride wisely not just with speed - use ur minds!
The bridge sure has eased some of the traffic congestion.
Is the current govt likely to win again, amidst lot of the infrastructure measures.
Tamizh Nadu people like any other Indians are funny people...need to see how the vote swings the next time.
GN CHetty Flyover-Chennai
The G N Chetty Road- North Boag Road intersection in T Nagar, which has become a major traffic point after the inauguration of the flyover last month, has also become an accident-prone spot in the absence of an automatic system to regulate traffic.
Though signal posts and lamps were put up on all four sides immediately after chief minister M Karunanidhi inaugurated the flyover on December 29, the system is yet to be functional.
A stretch of GN Chetty Road, which was made one-way during the construction of the flyover, has now been made two-way resulting in increase in vehicular movement at the intersection of Habibullah Road, Giri Road, G N Chetty Road, North Boag Road and Gemini flyover.
Air Port Flyover-Chennai
The airport flyover has not really eased traffic congestion and there are problems for the airport staff for now they have to trek to catch a bus for their destination as bus stops are far away now. Also it is reported that airport is visible very clearly from the flyover and hence on lookers get down from their vehicles and are using the flyover for sight seeing, creating blockades. Also I am not sure how safe it is being so close to airport and it being so visible. Probably laying a see thru fence for security purpose is necessary.
In North , flyovers will be built at Cemetry Road-Washermenpet clock tower intersection and at Ganeshapuram railway subway, while in South , a flyover with a vehicular subway will be constructed at Thiruvanmiyur- Lattice Bridge Road intersection.

Rahman with Oscar
The Indian hero among the nominees is Rahman, with three nominations — one for original score and two for original songs (Jai Ho and O Saya). “I’m happy to have done India proud. But I’m happier for Boyle, Resul (Pookutty) and every Indian crew member involved in the project. It’s all a team work. I hope we will bring the Oscars home,” Rahman told The Indian Express by phone. “I’m surprised at the same time because I didn’t expect three nominations. Credit should go to Gulzarji who wrote Jai Ho.”
Only two Indians have won the Oscar till date — Bhanu Athaiya (for costume design in “Gandhi”) and Satyajit Ray who was given an honourary Oscar for his contribution to films. In 1982, “Gandhi” was nominated for 11 and won eight.
The Slumdog Millionaire nominations, on the eve of the Indian release of the film, turned its star-studded premiere today at the Imax theatre in india a celebration party. A beaming Boyle, introduced, raved about and rooted for his cast and crew, especially the six young actors and his co-director Loveleen Tandan.
